It has been a strange year for the Chemical Brothers fans seeing them playing to packed crowds all year yet there was no studio release from the legendary duo, and bizarrely they released their second Best-Of in four years, Brotherhood. Hot on the heels of this however, comes The Chemical Brothers: Remixes. While some fans may feel a little ripped off as nearly half the tracks were on The Remixes Volume 06 in 2005, this aside I really like the latest addition to the Chemical’s discography. Whilst I haven’t been too impressed by more recent studio albums by the Chemicals, this album for me was like rediscovering an old friend.

The album begins with The Prodigy’s ‘Voodoo People’, which opens with the Chemicals trademark `rock the house then' vocal drop before assaulting the listener with dirty beats and funkier bass lines. This probably characterises their superlative remix skills by retaining enough from the original yet creating an equally original track of their own that sounds relatively nothing like the base track. The Method Man & The Charlatans remixes demonstrate, if we didn’t already know, that they are capable of remixing a wide variety of genres. The collection also includes two of my favourites remixes ever in, Swastika Eyes & Spiritualized, ‘I Think I'm In Love’. The two encapsulate the masterful talent the Chemicals have for remixes by creating two completely different but equally brilliant remixes. The other tracks included are by no means fillers and probably deserve a mention but perhaps something should be left to the listener to discover.

This is the Chemicals at their very best and while many hardcore fans may have many of these already it falls in to the must have category none the less. Along with Soulwax’s: Most of the remixes... this is a reminder that a good remix is far more than a kind of b-side filler.
