Super Extra Bonus Party Remix Album launch Party, Andrew’s Lane Theatre, Dublin, October 10th

Well this is my first contribution to ElectricCircus.net and have to thank Darren for telling me about the site and Matt/Niall for giving the okay for this.

It has been a very successful year for Super Extra Bonus Party (SEBP). A year which has seen them win the choice music prize, play a host of electric gigs throughout Ireland and abroad culminating in a jammed packed explosive set at Electric Picnic. In typical Bonus Party fashion last Friday seen them launch a remix album of their eponymous award winning debut in Andrew’s Lane Theatre, Dublin. The bash was an 8 till late mammoth night of music with an upbeat collection of Irish and Brazilian acts. The night played host to performances from T-Woc, Richie !Kaboogie, the Caipirinha Band, Nouveaunoise, R.S.A.G, The Vinny Club, SEPB and Ikeaboy. There was also a bonus for the first 300 people through the door, who got the remix album on CD for free. All this for €10, surely a recession buster (where are you now Lidl?).

The night kicked off in fantastic form with excellent DJ sets from T-Woc & Richie !Kaboogie. Next on stage was the Caipirinha Band all the way from Brazil, who whipped the crowd into a joyous mood and created a real party atmosphere with their upbeat samba and reggae beats. They were followed by electronic outfit Nouveaunoise who laid down a typically solid live performance which they have become known for. The party continued with R.S.A.G who had been recommended to me prior to this, and following the gig it was easy to see why. The only way to describe this one man band is somewhere between talking heads and joy division and it was a very impressive performance. One notable aspect of his show is the outstanding visuals used creating a silhouetted band that played in time with the music.

One of the acts I was really excited about seeing was The Vinny Club, a one man 8-bit maestro with a fascinating obsession with vintage video games and daft ’80s pop. Dressed as Freddie Mercury with a Rocky IV as visuals I might add, he produced an outstanding show with his electro 8-bit sound was infecting everyone on the dance floor and leaving me wanting more.

By the time SEBP took to the stage Andrew’s Lane was absolutely jammed packed, so much so that I couldn’t get near the front which was the only disappointing element to the night. After receiving a rousing reception from the 650+ crowd, they produced a blinding set of well known favourites from their first album accompanied by some stunning new tunes. Their unique brand of electronic music fused with indie and hip hop sent crowd absolutely wild, with bodies jumping and dancing everywhere. I have seen these guys loads of times and it is obvious they really enjoy playing live and always provide energetic and explosive performances of sheer quality. The most striking thing about SEBP is the continued improvement each time I see them play. They finished the set with a new track ‘Eamonn’ which is simply explosive and it sent the crowd into a state of frenzy. If the new tunes are anything to go by their second album will be an absolute cracker.

As if the night hadn’t already yielded enough quality music, Ikeaboy took to the stage to close the night in a most fitting way with his own brand of electro beats with a highly danceable performance. The whole night was great but there still is the little matter of the remix album to deal with.

The album entitled ‘Appetite for Reconstruction’ is a 16 track collection of remixes from a diverse collection of artists which in turn leads to diversity of remix styles in terms of electronic genre. I have given it a few spins already and it’s impressive. For one, the remixes sound completely different to the originals, but you don’t need to know the originals to appreciate them. The stand out mixes on it for me are Ikeaboy’s propeller mix, Decal’s Drone Rock mix & Nouveaunoise’s propeller mix (this one reminds me of The Chemical Brothers). After all that you can get the album for FREE from the link below and make a decision for yourself. Enjoy!
